My Precioussss Time for Actuarial Studiessss

We have to really squeeze out time to study for actuarial exams - time away from work, away from loved ones, away from the dating scene, away from earning additional income...the opportunity cost of our study time is huge!

It’s quite common to translate the exam hours to study time needed (eg 100 hours of study for every hour of exam time).

But let’s be honest with ourselves - on a scale of 1 to 10, how good is the quality of our studying during a 6 hour study marathon? We’d be lucky to have it consistently at 5 or 6 out of 10. (I was guilty too)

How do we keep it at a 7, 8 or 9?

We can try:

1. Active instead of passive studying - create quiz questions as you read, re-write study notes, do the examples on your own instead of just reading them.

2. Have 40-45 minute study cycles and a short 5 to 10 minute break.

3. Be self-aware - rather than forcing your way through studying more when you can’t focus, try relaxing a bit, divert your attention away, and come back to study after 10 minutes.

4. What time of the day do you concentrate best? Early in the morning, evening, night - there’s no one size fits all, experiment to find out!

Come share with us, what do you do to ensure your study time is of high quality?
