The Pride of Children

“Aha I have conquered the peak!”

A young man exclaimed in joy,

Reaching the summit of the mountain,

His companion smiled and said lovingly,

“My dear, a peak higher still, I conquered last month”

A bird watching the couple said laughingly,

“Ah what fools these humans are,

These peaks and many more,

I have conquered since I was young,

Every day I do it, and I don’t make a fuss!”

The mountain hearing them said amused,

“I am the mountain, I am the peak,

I stand majestically above it all,

These little things are here because I let them,

Yet think they have conquered me!”

The wise earth hearing all of them, had a good laugh,

“Ah my children, when will they learn,

It felt like only yesterday this mountain child was at the ocean bed,

I stirred and he rose steadily up,

My other tiny children are amazing too,

They are born, grow up and perish,

At such rapid pace I can’t keep up,

They do amazing deeds, frightening deeds,

Sometimes I wish they just be at peace,

Whatever it is they do, they go back into me when they are done,

Conquerors, rulers, sages and simple folk,

So many I have seen, many more I will see,

So much they struggle, why I do not know,

I hope they realise, they are one with me and one with it all…”
