A new bride's great joy, a new widow's deep grief,
A newborn child's tears, a father's tears for his departed son,
A young boy without a care in the world, a young boy doing his father's last rites,
Ah these paradoxes confront us, relentlessly as it were,
Great joy, snatched away in a moment by deep grief,
Simple joys, giving laughter at times of deep grief,
Great wisdom, imparted by deep grief,
Wisdom that gives strength, strength to weather storms ahead,
A family divided by death, a family united by death,
Simple moments, made precious by death,
Mystic insights, unlocked by death,
Strong characters, forged by death,
Oh Death, you are indeed a puzzle,
You are ruthless, yet you are wise,
You are cold, yet hide deep warmth beneath,
You seem to curse, yet bring blessings too,
I know not when you will come, yet see your work everywhere I look,
With pride I plan, I wish, I dream,
Forgetting that you can indeed come at any time,
Grant me, that I may never forget you,
That I remember what is true,
That I remember your gift is indeed the present.
